What is the Race to Carbon Zero Campaign?
The United Nations created the global Race to Carbon Zero campaign in an effort to slow the progression of global warming by minimizing the emission of greenhouse gases. It was launched in June of 2020 and is currently led by Nigel Topping from the UK and Gonzalo Munoz from Chile, the UN's High-Level Climate Champions for Climate Action.
What is the Purpose?
The Race to Carbon Zero campaign ultimately focuses on environmentally conscious job creation and sustainable growth across all industries worldwide through reducing emissions. Entities that join the Race to Carbon Zero pledge to not put more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than they remove, thus achieving net-zero emissions.
Race to Carbon Zero Goals
The ultimate goal of the Race to Carbon Zero campaign is for every business worldwide to pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. A halfway goal of reducing emissions by 50% is set for 2030. This means participants must agree to aim to cut their emissions in half by this benchmark. By joining the cause, several monumental feats will be achieved:

- Promote a healthier environment
- Contribute to cleaner air

How Can You Join the Race to Carbon Zero?
Any business or group can join the Race to Carbon Zero campaign. There are a few simple steps you must take. First, your entity must pledge to join the movement and achieve the halfway goal of 50% and net zero by 2050. Next, within a year of pledging, you must develop and submit a plan on how your company or group plans to achieve net-zero emissions. That's it. You are officially entered into the Race to Carbon Zero.
After the plan is submitted, it's time to take action. This is a marathon, not a sprint. There isn't a minute to waste if we are going to achieve the ultimate goal. Each year you must publish a progress report detailing the actions your organization took throughout the year and the results. These results will go into a community knowledge base along with everyone else's annual report. The idea is that everyone can learn from each other and achieve net zero by the target date.
